Key Takeaways

Viagra Connect is an OTC sildenafil 50mg tablet for erectile dysfunction, available in the UK since 2018. It works within 30 to 60 minutes and lasts 4 to 6 hours. Generic sildenafil does the same job at a lower cost.

What Is Viagra Connect?#

Viagra Connect is a branded sildenafil tablet, available over the counter in the UK without a GP prescription. It contains 50mg of sildenafil citrate, the same active ingredient that's been used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) since Viagra launched in 1998. The difference is that Viagra Connect sits in the OTC category, meaning a pharmacist can supply it directly after a short assessment, rather than it needing a doctor's prescription.

It became available in the UK in 2018, following a significant decision by the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) to reclassify sildenafil 50mg from a prescription-only medicine to a pharmacy medicine. At the time, this was a landmark moment for men's health in the UK. For the first time, men experiencing ED could walk into a pharmacy, have a conversation with a pharmacist, and leave with an effective, clinically proven treatment the same day.

ED is more common than many men realise. Around 40% of men will experience difficulties with erections by their 40s, and that figure rises with age. It's not a fringe issue, and it shouldn't require weeks of waiting for a GP appointment to address.

How Viagra Connect Works#

Sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra Connect, belongs to a class of medicines called PDE5 inhibitors. Here's what that means in practice.

When you're sexually aroused, your body releases a molecule called cGMP, which relaxes the smooth muscle in the blood vessels of the penis and allows blood to flow in, producing an erection. The problem for men with ED is that an enzyme called PDE5 breaks cGMP down too quickly, reducing blood flow before a firm erection can be maintained.

Sildenafil blocks PDE5. By stopping this enzyme from working, it allows cGMP to build up, blood flow to increase, and erections to develop and be maintained during sexual activity.

Two important points here. First, Viagra Connect only works when you're sexually stimulated. It doesn't cause spontaneous erections. Second, it doesn't affect libido directly. If reduced sex drive is the main issue, it's worth speaking to a clinician about other potential causes, including low testosterone.

Typically, Viagra Connect takes around 30 to 60 minutes to start working. Most men find the hour mark is the sweet spot. Effects generally last for 4 to 6 hours, though this varies between individuals.

Viagra Connect vs Prescription Viagra: Is There a Difference?#

The short answer is no, not in terms of the medicine itself. Both contain sildenafil citrate at 50mg. The main differences are around access and packaging.

Prescription Viagra requires a GP or clinician to prescribe it, giving access to higher doses (100mg) if needed. Viagra Connect is fixed at 50mg and doesn't require a prescription, though a pharmacist assessment is still required.

The price difference is where things get more interesting. Branded products carry a premium. If cost is a concern, generic sildenafil is worth considering. It contains exactly the same active ingredient, works in the same way, and is bioequivalent to both Viagra and Viagra Connect, but at a significantly lower price point.

At Totiva, for example, generic sildenafil 50mg (8 tablets) costs £9.99, compared to Viagra Connect 50mg (8 tablets) at £19.99. That's a meaningful difference if you're using it regularly. You can review all the options on Totiva's ED treatment page.

Viagra Connect vs Generic Sildenafil vs Tadalafil: A Practical Comparison#

For many men researching ED treatment, the real question isn't just about Viagra Connect, it's about which treatment suits them best. Here's a straightforward breakdown.

Viagra Connect (sildenafil 50mg)

  • Taken as needed, 30 to 60 minutes before sex
  • Effects last 4 to 6 hours
  • OTC availability (pharmacist assessment required)
  • 4 tablets: £11.99 | 8 tablets: £19.99 at Totiva

Generic Sildenafil (50mg or 100mg)

  • Same mechanism and timing as Viagra Connect
  • Available at 50mg or 100mg (the higher dose via prescription)
  • Significantly more affordable
  • 50mg x 8: £9.99 | 100mg x 8: £11.99 at Totiva

As-Needed Tadalafil (generic Cialis)

  • Taken as needed, but effects last up to 36 hours
  • More flexibility around timing
  • Good option if spontaneity matters
  • 10mg x 8: £12.99 | 20mg x 8: £14.99 at Totiva

Daily Tadalafil (2.5mg or 5mg)

  • Taken every day regardless of planned sexual activity
  • No timing required around intercourse
  • Suits men who are sexually active several times a week
  • 2.5mg x 28: £9.99 | 5mg x 28: £14.99 at Totiva

The best option genuinely depends on your lifestyle, how often you're sexually active, and how your body responds. A pharmacist-led consultation can help you work through that properly rather than guessing.

Who Can Take Viagra Connect?#

Viagra Connect is suitable for adult men (18 and over) who have erectile dysfunction. It's not suitable for everyone, and this is where the pharmacist consultation matters.

You should not take Viagra Connect if you:

  • Take nitrate medicines (often prescribed for chest pain or heart conditions, such as GTN spray, isosorbide mononitrate, or amyl nitrite). Combining nitrates with sildenafil can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
  • Take alpha-blockers for high blood pressure or prostate problems, unless your dose has been stable and a clinician has assessed the combination as safe
  • Have had a recent heart attack or stroke (within the last 6 months)
  • Have severe liver disease or significant kidney impairment
  • Have low blood pressure (hypotension) or poorly controlled high blood pressure
  • Have a condition that makes sexual activity inadvisable for cardiovascular reasons
  • Have a history of non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (a rare eye condition)

The interaction with nitrates is the most critical one. Men who take GTN spray for angina, for instance, cannot use sildenafil-based treatments safely. Tadalafil shares this contraindication. If you're on nitrates, speak to your GP about alternatives or underlying causes.

Viagra Connect is also not suitable for women or under-18s.

Side Effects to Know About#

Sildenafil has a well-established safety profile built up over more than 25 years of use. Most side effects are mild and don't cause men to stop treatment.

Common side effects (affecting more than 1 in 10 users) include:

  • Headache
  • Flushing (feeling hot in the face or neck)
  • Indigestion or stomach discomfort
  • Nasal congestion

Less common but possible:

  • Dizziness
  • Visual disturbances (mild changes in colour perception or light sensitivity)
  • Muscle aches
  • Palpitations

Rare but serious:

  • Sudden vision loss or hearing changes (seek immediate medical attention)
  • Prolonged, painful erection lasting more than 4 hours (priapism). This requires urgent treatment
  • Severe drop in blood pressure, particularly if combined with alcohol or nitrates

Regarding alcohol: drinking heavily before taking Viagra Connect reduces its effectiveness and increases the risk of side effects like dizziness and flushing. A moderate amount of alcohol isn't necessarily a problem, but it's worth being sensible about it.

Food can also affect how quickly it works. A large, fatty meal slows absorption, so if you take it after a big dinner, expect it to take longer to kick in.

First-Time Users: What to Expect#

If you're considering Viagra Connect for the first time, it's worth managing expectations thoughtfully. Sildenafil is highly effective, with clinical trials consistently showing it helps around 70 to 80% of men with organic ED. But it's not universal, and individual responses vary.

For some men, particularly those with performance anxiety, the first attempt doesn't go perfectly. This doesn't mean the medication isn't working. Anxiety itself can interfere with the physiological response needed for sildenafil to be effective. If stress or anxiety is a significant factor for you, it may be worth discussing this openly, either with a pharmacist or a therapist specialising in sexual health.

A few practical tips for first use:

  • Take it about an hour before you expect to be sexually active
  • Avoid a large meal beforehand if possible
  • Limit alcohol
  • Remember that sexual stimulation is still needed for it to work
  • Don't panic if the first attempt isn't perfect. Give it a fair trial across a few uses before drawing conclusions

When Should You See a GP Instead?#

Viagra Connect is appropriate for many men with ED, but it's not always the right starting point. You should speak to your GP if:

  • Your ED started suddenly and severely, without an obvious cause
  • You have chest pain, shortness of breath, or other cardiovascular symptoms
  • You haven't had an erection at all for a prolonged period
  • You have other symptoms suggesting a hormonal issue (fatigue, loss of libido, reduced body hair, mood changes)
  • You're taking medications that might interact with sildenafil and haven't had clinical advice
  • ED is causing significant distress and you want to explore whether psychological support alongside treatment would help

The NHS does offer ED treatment, typically through a GP referral to urology or sexual health services. Waiting times vary considerably. For many men, an online consultation via a GPhC-registered pharmacy is a faster, equally legitimate route, provided the pharmacist is conducting a proper clinical assessment rather than simply selling a product.

Totiva's pharmacist-led consultations are designed for exactly this purpose. There's no subscription required, and you only pay for treatment after a clinician has confirmed it's appropriate for you. If you'd like to explore your options, you can start a free ED consultation with Totiva here.

Can Viagra Connect Be Used Long-Term?#

Yes, sildenafil is safe for long-term use in appropriate candidates, and it doesn't become less effective over time in the way that some men worry it might. Many men use it regularly for years without issues.

That said, ED is sometimes a symptom of an underlying condition rather than a problem in itself. Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, and hormonal imbalances can all contribute to erectile difficulties. If you're relying on ED treatment consistently, it's worth ensuring you've had the relevant health checks, particularly around blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol.

This isn't a reason to avoid treatment. Sildenafil managing your symptoms is genuinely useful while you address any broader health factors. But the two things work well together.
