Key Takeaways

Mounjaro (tirzepatide) is a once-weekly injection that works on the GLP-1 and GIP hormones to reduce appetite and increase fullness, helping support sustainable weight loss alongside healthy lifestyle changes. The pen is stored in the fridge and injected under the skin into the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, with sites rotated weekly. Always check the pen before use and dispose of it safely in a sharps container. If a dose is missed, it can usually be taken within four days, otherwise skip it and continue as normal. Totiva Health provides pharmacist-led support throughout treatment to ensure safe, confident use.

Starting injectable weight-loss treatment can feel overwhelming, especially if you’ve never self-administered medication before. At Totiva Health, our pharmacist-led clinical team supports you throughout your treatment, helping you feel confident, informed, and safe when using medicines such as Mounjaro.

This guide explains how Mounjaro works, how to use the injection pen correctly, and how to reduce discomfort or dosing errors when taking your treatment at home.

How does Mounjaro work?#

Mounjaro contains tirzepatide, a medication that works on two appetite-regulating hormones: GLP-1 and GIP. These hormones are released naturally after eating and help regulate hunger, fullness, and blood sugar levels.

By enhancing feelings of satiety and reducing appetite, Mounjaro can help lower calorie intake and support sustained weight loss when combined with healthy lifestyle changes. Your Totiva prescriber will assess whether Mounjaro is suitable for you based on your medical history, current weight, and treatment goals.

How often do you take Mounjaro?#

Mounjaro is taken once weekly, on the same day each week. Choosing a consistent injection day and setting a reminder can help you stay on track and reduce the chance of missing a dose.

If you do miss a dose, your Totiva prescriber or pharmacist can advise you on how to continue treatment safely.

Step-by-step guide: using your Mounjaro pen#

1. Check your pen before use#

Mounjaro pens should be stored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. On the day of your injection, remove the pen around 30 minutes before use to allow it to reach room temperature.

Before injecting, check that:

  • The medication and dose match your prescription
  • The pen is within its expiry date
  • The solution appears clear and colourless
  • The pen has not been dropped or damaged

Do not use the pen if the liquid looks cloudy, frozen, or contains particles.

2. Wash your hands#

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before preparing your injection. This helps reduce the risk of infection. If someone is helping you inject, they should also wash their hands.

3. Choose an injection site#

Mounjaro is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) into fatty tissue. To minimise irritation or the development of lumps, rotate injection sites each week.

Recommended injection areas include:

  • Abdomen – avoid the area within two inches of the belly button
  • Thigh – rotate sites between doses
  • Back of the upper arm – may require assistance

Avoid injecting into areas that are bruised, scarred, or irritated. Clean the chosen area with an alcohol wipe or soap and water before injecting.

4. Prepare the pen#

Mounjaro is supplied as a pre-filled injection pen designed for single use. Follow the instructions provided with your pen to prepare it for injection.

If you are unsure at any stage, your Totiva pharmacist can guide you before you administer your dose.

5. Injecting your dose#

Place the pen firmly against your skin at the injection site. Activate the pen according to the instructions provided with your medication.

Hold the pen in place for the full recommended time to ensure the entire dose is delivered. Once complete, remove the pen from your skin.

If there is any slight bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean cotton pad.

6. Dispose of the pen safely#

After use, place the pen into an approved sharps container. Do not reuse pens or attempt to recap needles.
