Is Wegovy the same as Ozempic?

Wegovy and Ozempic contain the same active ingredient, semaglutide, but they are licensed for different uses. Wegovy is approved for weight management, while Ozempic is licensed for type 2 diabetes. Wegovy tablets are taken once daily and are gradually increased to a maintenance dose of 25mg daily. They should not be used together with Ozempic, Rybelsus, or any other GLP-1 medicine.

How long do I need to take Wegovy?

Wegovy is intended for long-term weight management. Many people regain weight after stopping treatment, so your prescriber will work with you to decide the safest and most suitable long-term plan. This may include continuing treatment, maintaining your current dose, reducing the dose, or stopping treatment if it is no longer appropriate.

Can I take Wegovy if I have diabetes?

Wegovy may be suitable for some people with type 2 diabetes, but this depends on your medical history and current medicines. It is not suitable for everyone, especially if you use insulin, sulphonylureas, or certain other diabetes medicines, due to the risk of low blood sugar or the need for closer monitoring. What if I experience nausea?

Nausea is a common side effect of Wegovy and is usually temporary, especially when starting treatment or increasing the dose. To help manage nausea, eat smaller meals, avoid rich or fatty foods, eat slowly, and stay well hydrated. Wegovy tablets should be taken once daily in the morning on an empty stomach with water only. Wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking, or taking any other oral medicines.
