Key Takeaways

Eat 1,400–1,800 kcal a day with plenty of protein (1.2–1.6g per kg) and 25–30g of fibre. During early Wegovy dose steps, keep meals small and plain. At maintenance, focus on protein to protect muscle.

Wegovy works best alongside a balanced diet. A good meal plan for Wegovy keeps daily calories between 1,400 and 1,800 kcal (depending on your size and activity level), aims for 1.2–1.6g of protein per kg of body weight each day, and includes at least 25–30g of fibre. Those targets support weight loss, protect muscle, and help manage constipation, which affects roughly 1 in 7 people on semaglutide.

Note: if you have kidney disease, the 1.2–1.6g/kg protein target above may be unsafe without specialist input. For CKD stages 3–5, a nephrologist should guide your protein intake before you follow any meal plan. If you have another condition that affects your diet, check with your clinician before starting.

How your Wegovy dose phase shapes what you eat#

Wegovy injections follow a five-step titration schedule: 0.25mg for the first four weeks, then 0.5mg, 1mg, 1.7mg, and finally 2.4mg at maintenance. Nausea is usually worst during the early steps, especially the jump from 0.25mg to 0.5mg.

During titration (roughly weeks 1–16), stick to smaller portions eaten more frequently. Plain, low-fat foods are easier to tolerate: plain rice, boiled potatoes, scrambled eggs, toast, and banana. Save richer meals for days when you feel well.

At maintenance dose, appetite suppression is stronger and nausea usually settles. Focus shifts to hitting protein and fibre targets consistently, even when hunger is very low.

If you are taking oral Wegovy tablets rather than the injection, please note that the 5-day plan below has been designed with the injection titration schedule in mind. The oral tablet formulation follows a different titration schedule and a different nausea pattern, so the meal timing and portion guidance here may not map directly onto your experience. Check your prescribing information or speak to your clinician for tablet-specific guidance. You can read more in our guide on how to take the Wegovy pill.

A 5-day plan with macros#

Each day targets roughly 1,500–1,700 kcal and 100–120g of protein. Adjust portions up or down based on your starting weight.

Protein and muscle loss#

Evidence from analyses of GLP-1 weight loss trials suggests that a meaningful proportion of weight lost on these medicines can come from lean muscle rather than fat, though the exact proportion varies considerably across individuals and study methods. Hitting 1.2–1.6g of protein per kg of body weight each day, combined with two or three resistance training sessions per week, is the most reliable way to protect muscle. Good budget-friendly protein sources available at most UK supermarkets include tinned tuna, eggs, cottage cheese, frozen edamame, and own-brand Greek yoghurt.

Fibre and staying regular#

Aim for 25–30g of fibre daily. Good sources include oats, tinned beans and lentils, wholemeal bread, and courgettes. Wegovy slows gut motility, so very high-fibre meals concentrated into one sitting can cause bloating. Spread your fibre across the day rather than loading it all into one meal.

If constipation is a problem, a psyllium husk supplement can help. Take it with a large glass of water and at least two hours apart from any other medicines. If you are taking oral Wegovy tablets, this two-hour separation is especially important, as psyllium husk could potentially affect the absorption of your tablet. Ask your pharmacist before starting if you are on regular medications. Our guide to fibre supplements on GLP-1 medications covers options in more detail.

What to do on a bad nausea day#

If nausea is severe, do not push through large meals. Try plain white rice with a poached egg, plain crackers with cottage cheese, or a banana with a small handful of plain oats. Eat slowly and in small amounts. Cold or room-temperature foods tend to be easier than hot dishes.

Hydration matters more on these days. Aim for 2–2.5 litres of fluid daily, mostly water. Small sips throughout the day are better than large amounts at once.

Foods and drinks to limit#

A few things are worth reducing while on Wegovy:

  • Fatty or fried foods: these slow gastric emptying further and make nausea worse.
  • Very high-fibre meals in one sitting: spreading fibre through the day is better than concentrating it.
  • High-sugar foods and drinks: processed sugar adds calories without protein or fibre. Research, including a large umbrella review published in the BMJ, has linked high dietary sugar consumption to multiple adverse health outcomes.
  • Alcohol: eating less overall while on Wegovy means there is less food in your stomach to slow the absorption of alcohol, which can lead to stronger intoxication from smaller amounts than you might expect. This is a general effect of reduced food intake rather than a specific pharmacological interaction with Wegovy itself. If you also take insulin or a sulfonylurea for diabetes, there is an additional risk of low blood sugar with alcohol. For most people on Wegovy alone, the main concerns are stronger intoxication from smaller amounts and lower nutritional quality of the overall diet.

Nutrients to watch#

Eating significantly less food over many months can reduce intake of vitamin B12, iron, and calcium. A general multivitamin covering 100% of the reference nutrient intake (RNI) for these is a reasonable safety net if your appetite is very low. Check with your GP or a registered dietitian (look for HCPC registration) if you have concerns, particularly if you follow a plant-based diet.

Using UK food labelling#

The traffic light labelling system on UK supermarket packaging is a practical guide. Aim for mostly green and amber labels, and use red labels as a prompt to check portion size rather than a reason to avoid a food entirely. Tesco, Aldi, and Lidl own-brand products offer budget-friendly options that align well with the meal plan above.

NICE guidance (TA875) supports semaglutide for weight management alongside lifestyle change, which means dietary quality is a clinical requirement of treatment, not just a bonus. Wegovy on its own produces results, but pairing it with consistent nutrition is what sustains them.

If you are considering starting or switching weight loss treatment, Totiva's weight loss service covers Wegovy injections (with an average loss of 20.7% of body weight) alongside other options, with a free online consultation reviewed by a UK clinician.
