Where to Buy Minoxidil in the UK

Topical minoxidil is available without a prescription at most UK pharmacies, supermarkets and registered online pharmacies. You can pick it up from Boots, Superdrug and large supermarkets, or order it online. No GP visit needed for the topical version.

Do you need a prescription?#

For men, the 5% strength of topical minoxidil is classified by the MHRA as a General Sale List (GSL) medicine, meaning it can be sold from a shelf without pharmacist supervision, much like a painkiller. The 2% strength is also classified as GSL. You do not need a prescription for either strength. Note that for women, the 5% strength is classified as a Pharmacy (P) medicine, meaning it must be purchased with pharmacist oversight rather than taken directly from a shelf.

There are a few self-selection cautions to be aware of before buying. Minoxidil should not be used by anyone under 18. People with cardiovascular conditions, including low blood pressure or heart disease, should speak to a pharmacist or GP before using it. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not use minoxidil. If you are unsure whether it is right for you, a brief chat with a pharmacist at the counter costs nothing.

Oral minoxidil is different. Tablets for hair loss are prescribed off-label in the UK, with the dose determined individually by the prescribing clinician. Oral minoxidil is not available over the counter, and it is not routinely funded by the NHS for hair loss. You would need a private prescription.

Buying online safely#

Buying from an unregulated seller on Amazon or a similar marketplace carries a real counterfeit risk. To protect yourself, stick to sellers that are either the brand's official account or a GPhC-registered pharmacy.

The GPhC (General Pharmaceutical Council) keeps a public register of all legally operating UK online pharmacies. You can search it at pharmacyregulation.org. A registered pharmacy will display the GPhC logo with a clickable link to verify its registration. If you cannot find that logo, do not buy from the site.

2% vs 5% minoxidil#

Both strengths are available over the counter in the UK. The 5% solution or foam is more effective for most men and is the standard choice for male pattern baldness. Clinical trials show better hair count outcomes with 5% compared to 2% in male patients.

The 2% solution was originally marketed for women, and many women's products still use this concentration. Women can use 5% minoxidil, though as noted above this strength requires pharmacist involvement for female purchasers. UK dermatologists sometimes start women on 2% due to a higher rate of unwanted facial hair growth at the stronger dose. For men buying over the counter, 5% is generally the right starting point.

What to expect in the first few months#

Minoxidil takes time. Most people see no visible change for the first 8 to 12 weeks. Then there is the shedding phase.

In the first 1 to 8 weeks of use, some people notice more hair coming out than usual. This may be a normal response: minoxidil can push resting hair follicles into an active growth phase, and older hairs can shed as new ones begin to grow underneath. However, shedding can also occasionally indicate incorrect use or a reaction to the product. If shedding is heavy or goes on for more than 8 weeks, contact a pharmacist or clinician rather than assuming it is a positive sign.

Meaningful regrowth typically becomes visible from month 3 or 4. Results vary considerably depending on the degree of hair loss, how long it has been going on, and individual response. Trial data show that many men experience a reduction in further loss, with a proportion seeing measurable regrowth, but outcomes differ by population and hair loss stage. Results are not guaranteed.

Stopping minoxidil#

Minoxidil works only while you use it. If you stop, hair gained during treatment typically sheds within a few months. This is not a sign the treatment has failed. It reflects how minoxidil maintains the hair growth cycle rather than changing underlying hair loss biology.

Adding finasteride#

For men with male pattern baldness, combining minoxidil with finasteride is supported by clinical evidence and often gives better results than either treatment alone.
