Do Weight Loss Jabs Slow Down Biological Ageing?
A mouse study hints semaglutide might slow biological ageing, not just cause weight loss. Here's what's proven, and what isn't, for UK patients.

Key Takeaways
A mouse study found semaglutide (Wegovy) extended lifespan by 12% and improved cellular ageing markers. It's early animal research, not proven in humans, and UK prescribing criteria haven't changed.
A new mouse study suggests semaglutide, the drug in Wegovy, might do more than help with weight loss. It may also slow some markers of biological ageing. The mice lived longer and showed healthier cells. That's genuinely interesting science. But it's still a mouse study. Nothing here has been proven in humans, and no UK prescriber, including Totiva, can offer a GLP-1 medicine specifically to slow ageing.
What biological ageing actually means#
Your chronological age is just your birthdays. Biological ageing is different. It's the gradual wear and tear inside your cells and tissues over time.
Two people can both be 60 years old. One might have the cells of a 50 year old. The other might have the cells of a 70 year old. Health, activity, sleep and diet all play a part.
Scientists measure biological ageing using things like inflammation levels, how well your metabolism works, and changes in your DNA. These are sometimes called 'hallmarks of ageing'.
The mouse study behind the headlines#
In a 2026 study published in the journal Nature and reported by BBC Science Focus, researchers gave semaglutide to female mice aged 20 months. That's roughly late middle age for a mouse.
The semaglutide-treated mice had a median lifespan of 834 days, compared with 742 days in the control group — a difference of 92 days, or around 12%.
The mice also showed better markers of cellular health. This included lower inflammation and improved metabolic function, both linked to healthier ageing.

Why a mouse result doesn't translate straight to people#
Mice are useful for early research. They're not small humans, though.
Lab mice live short, controlled lives. Their biology, diet and environment are nothing like ours. Drug doses in animal studies are also scaled differently to human doses.
Most promising ageing findings in animals need 10 years or more of human trials before we know if they hold up. Many never do. Right now, semaglutide is licensed in the UK for type 2 diabetes and weight management, not for slowing ageing.
Semaglutide and tirzepatide are not the same drug#
It's easy to lump all weight loss injections together. They work differently, though.
Semaglutide (used in Wegovy) is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. It copies a gut hormone that reduces appetite. Tirzepatide (used in Mounjaro) is a dual GIP/GLP-1 receptor agonist. It acts on two hormone pathways instead of one.
The mouse ageing study used semaglutide only. We can't assume the same effect would happen with tirzepatide, because the two drugs don't work through identical mechanisms.
How this compares with other ageing research#
GLP-1 drugs aren't the only medicines being studied for ageing effects.
Metformin, a cheap diabetes tablet, is the focus of the TAME trial (Targeting Ageing with Metformin). This trial is investigating whether metformin can delay age-related disease in humans. It hasn't reported results yet.
Caloric restriction, eating meaningfully less while still getting enough nutrients, has extended lifespan in animal studies for decades. Keeping this up long term is hard for most people, though, which limits its real-world use.
So semaglutide's mouse result sits alongside other unproven leads, not ahead of them.

What this means if you already use Wegovy or Mounjaro#
If you're already on treatment, nothing changes for you right now. Your prescriber assesses eligibility using BMI and weight-related health conditions, not ageing biomarkers. NHS and NICE guidance hasn't shifted, and MHRA licensing for these medicines still covers weight management and diabetes only.
The proven benefits, meaningful weight loss and improvements in blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol, are still the main reason to take these medicines. Any effect on biological ageing is a bonus that hasn't been confirmed in people.
Totiva offers both injectable and oral GLP-1 based weight-management options, including Wegovy (semaglutide, available as an injection or as Wegovy Tablets) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide). A clinician assesses suitability individually through our weight loss service, based on current UK eligibility criteria rather than ageing research.
If you're curious about the science, it's worth keeping an eye on future human trials. Just don't expect a prescription for anti-ageing purposes any time soon.
