Key Takeaways

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection taken on the same day each week using a pre-filled pen, where a new needle is attached for each dose, the injection is given under the skin in the abdomen, thigh, or upper arm, the button is held until the dose counter reaches zero, and the needle is disposed of safely in a sharps container, with pharmacist support from Totiva Health available throughout treatment.

Starting injectable weight-loss treatment can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve never given yourself an injection before. At Totiva Health, our pharmacist-led clinical team supports you throughout your treatment, helping you feel confident, informed, and safe when using medicines such as Wegovy.

This guide explains how Wegovy works, how to use the injection pen correctly, and how to reduce discomfort or dosing errors when administering your treatment at home.

How does Wegovy work?#

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a medicine from a group called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These medicines mimic a natural hormone released in the gut after eating, which plays a role in appetite control and blood sugar regulation.

By slowing stomach emptying and increasing feelings of fullness, Wegovy can help reduce hunger and calorie intake. When combined with healthy lifestyle changes, clinical studies show it can support meaningful and sustained weight loss in suitable patients.

Your Totiva prescriber will assess whether Wegovy is appropriate for you based on your medical history, current weight, and individual treatment goals.

How often do you take Wegovy?#

Wegovy is taken once weekly, on the same day each week. Choosing a consistent injection day and setting a reminder can help make treatment part of your routine and reduce the risk of missed doses.

If you do miss a dose, your Totiva pharmacist or prescriber can advise on how best to continue safely.

Step-by-step guide: using your Wegovy pen#

1. Check your pen before use#

Wegovy pens should be stored in the refrigerator between 2°C and 8°C. On injection day, remove the pen around 30 minutes before use so it can reach room temperature.

Before injecting, check that:

  • The medication and dose match your prescription
  • The pen is within its expiry date
  • The solution is clear and colourless
  • The pen has not been dropped or damaged

Do not use the pen if the liquid appears cloudy, frozen, or contains particles.

2. Wash your hands#

Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water before preparing your injection. This helps reduce the risk of infection. If someone is assisting with the injection, they should also wash their hands.

3. Choose an injection site#

Wegovy is injected under the skin (subcutaneously) into fatty tissue. To reduce irritation or the development of lumps, rotate injection sites each week.

Recommended injection areas include:

  • Abdomen – stay at least two inches away from the belly button
  • Thigh – rotate locations between doses
  • Back of the upper arm – may require assistance

Avoid injecting into areas that are bruised, scarred, or irritated. Clean the chosen site with an alcohol wipe or soap and water before injecting.

4. Prepare the pen#

Each injection requires a new needle.

Remove the paper tab from a new needle, push the needle straight onto the pen, and twist until secure. Remove the outer needle cap and keep it for later. Remove and discard the inner needle cover.

If this is your first dose from a new pen, you will need to perform a flow check to ensure the pen is working correctly. This is explained in the patient leaflet, or your Totiva pharmacist can guide you.

How to inject Wegovy (video demonstration)#

This video shows correct injection technique. Always follow the dose and instructions provided by your Totiva prescriber.

5. Injecting your dose#

Turn the dose selector until your prescribed dose appears in the window. Insert the needle into your chosen injection site.

Press and hold the dose button until the counter shows 0, then keep the needle in place for six seconds to ensure the full dose is delivered.

Remove the needle and apply gentle pressure if needed.

6. Dispose of the needle safely#

Carefully recap the needle using the outer cap, remove it from the pen, and place it into an approved sharps container. Never reuse needles.

Important safety tips when using Wegovy#

  • If you miss a dose, it can usually be taken within five days
  • If more than five days have passed, skip the missed dose and continue as scheduled
  • Never take two doses together
  • Keep the pen capped until ready to use
  • Do not use the pen if it has been dropped or damaged

If you experience side effects or have questions about injecting, our Totiva clinical team is always available to help.
